So as you know- most Indians don't eat beef.
A lot go completely vegetarian all together
India is home to the Hindu religion
And believers don't want to harm other living creatures.
The cow is considered a sacred animal and therefore people don't want to slaughter it at eat it.
There are MANY Muslims in India as well.
In fact, there are more Muslims in Hyderabad than Hindus.
Either way, the concept of not eating that much meat- and not eating beef at all it so ingrained in their culture that most just stick to it
No matter what their religion is.
McDonald's restaurants in India are the only ones in the world that don't offer beef at all.
They have veggie and chicken burgers...but no beef.
Lucky for us- Sister Alice is willing to go to great lengths to feed us familiar food.
She ventured to a VERY back-ally butcher shop and brought home THIS:
BEEF- for dinner!
She made it into a stew with rice
And in true Indian style we sat on the floor to eat it....
I might have used a fork though (in not so Indian style) because it was WAY too hot to eat with my hands
Evidently it is POSSIBLE to get beef in India but that might be the only time I eat it for the next few months....it's not exactly easy to come up with the stuff.
For now I'll just have to live without steak and enjoy watching the pet cow of Marredpally (our neighborhood) enjoy a life of bliss NOT getting eaten.
Seriously cows just walk around the streets constantly here
This is T-bone.
He hangs out on our street.
