Through rain or shine...kicking the crap out of disease!

Author: Ale /

In an effort to promote public health and sanitation our group has been working on the soilet project.
Only 31% of Indians have access to a toilet
More Indians have access to a cell phone
Welcome to a country that is stuck between third and first world
Currently, the government is trying to eliminate open defecation which causes a lot of diseases in here.
Our team is using a concept that started in Ghana called the "Soilet" to solve this sanitation issue
The soilet has three parts:
A toilet
A digester box
and topsoil drainage.
Waste is separated in the digester box
Liquid waste is filtered through the soil and the soil waste is devoured by
earthworms
It is very practical in isolated communities with few resources
and it can be built with local materials: bricks, gravel, pipe, soil, and worms.

This week has been going great and we almost have the first one built
I haven't personally gone to help build it yet
but Brandon and Sean have been working hard to see it through to the end

Lexie and Ashlee are troopers and worked hard to dig all day

The people in this slum seemed to really appreciate what they are doing

Through rain or shine these people worked hard and it's starting to pay off.
In a few days we will have our first soilet built!

I'm really proud of our team...and I'll be there to dig for the next one!
